Crosman Nitro Venom Review

Crosman Nitro Venom – Click to enlarge

The Crosman Nitro Venom is one of those air rifles you can’t help but fall in love with. It’s deadly accurate, has an excellent range and gives you more than enough power to take down pests or small game. I’ve shot high-end .22s, but I always find myself coming back to the Nitro Venom. It’s just fun to shoot.

The Nitro Venom is the #1 Crosman air rifle in my book. That’s why I was so excited to get a chance to review this gun.

The Basics

The Nitro Venom is a .22 caliber break barrel rifle. It’s a bit on the heavy side at 7.4 pounds, but at 44.5” long, a heavier weight is expected. It’s also powered by Nitrogen Piston, which I prefer over a typical spring-piston rifle. Why? It’s easier to cock. It’s quieter, and there’s minimal recoil. Nitrogen Piston rifles aren’t affected by weather, and they’re 55% faster than coil spring guns.

Like other Crosman rifles, this one comes with a 3-9×32 mm scope. I’m usually ready to replace bundled scopes right out of the box, but this one works pretty well. It’s perfect for the everyday shooter.

Powerful and Durable

The Nitro Venom is powerful and durable – a formidable combination. It’s got a hardwood stock that’s comfortable in both hands, and a raised cheek piece for additional comfort when shooting.

Crosman says the Nitro Venom shoots at up 950 fps with alloy pellets. I can’t say that I’ve achieved that speed, but I’d say I came close.

Deadly Accurate

Most .22 air rifles are accurate, but the Nitro Venom is an exception. Nearly every piece of this gun is designed to improve accuracy.

  • The forearm is just wide enough to rest on the palm of your hand, which makes it easier to achieve more accurate shots.
  • The fluted muzzlebrake reduces recoil.
  • The 3-9×32 mm scope helps you zero in on your target and hit it.

My first few rounds with this rifle were surprisingly accurate. After my 100-shot break-in, it was even more accurate. I was getting one inch groups at 10 meters.

Between the accuracy and power of this rifle, you’ll have no problems taking down squirrels, birds, rabbits and other small game.

The Good

The Nitro Venom is accurate, powerful and beautifully designed. It’s perfect for tracking down pests and small game hunting. For under $200, you’d be hard-pressed to find another .22 caliber air rifle that can match this one in terms of accuracy and power.

The Bad

The trigger does have a bit of a pull (5 lbs.). I’d recommend replacing it if the pull is too hard for you.

The scope is of decent quality, but you’ll need to recalibrate it every 200-250 shots. I found this to be a bit inconvenient, but it’s certainly not a deal breaker.

The Bottom Line

No matter whether you’re just getting started or a seasoned pro, this is an air rifle that’s easy to use and easy to maintain, but exceptionally powerful and accurate. I’d recommend Crosman’s Nitro Venom to any shooter who’s in the market for a new air rifle.
