RWS Model 54 Review

RWS Model 54 – Click to enlarge

Some of you may know the RWS Model 54 air rifle as the “Air King,” and that’s exactly what it is. German-made, recoilless, 900 FPS, this air rifle is a pleasure to shoot, and it looks great too. Before the release of the 54, I had never seen a spring-piston that was totally recoilless. Now, I’ll have a hard time going back to ones that aren’t.

.22 Caliber Combo Rifle

The RWS Model 54 is a .22 caliber spring-piston side lever rifle with a two-stage adjustable trigger and automatic safety. It’s German-made with a beautiful beech stock. The Model 54 is designed for right-handed shooters, and features blade and ramp front sights as well as adjustable rear sights.

“Air King” Powerful

At about 10 lbs. (without the scope), this rifle is on the heavy side, but it packs some power. There’s a reason they call this rifle the “Air King”. With a velocity of 900 FPS, you’ll have no issues using this for small game hunting or target shooting.

With a 39lb cocking weight, you’ll need a little muscle to cock this rifle.

Recoilless for Great Accuracy

When it comes to accuracy, the Model 54 is unmatched. At 25 yards, I was getting 1/4” groups and 1/2” groups at 50 yards.

The model 54’s design is based on the 48/52 RWS series. Because the action is floating on rails, it’s virtually recoilless. Not only does this make the gun more comfortable to shoot, but it greatly improves its accuracy too. When fired, the action moves back in the stock to absorb the recoil. The pellet then exits the barrel before the spring’s vibration can affect it. This greatly improves the accuracy of this rifle, and makes it an excellent choice for long range small game hunting and pest control.

The side lever design also helps improve accuracy as well as the TO6 trigger, which is 2-stage adjustable. The checkered forearm and grip give you excellent control over this rifle too. Just about every aspect of this rifle is designed to improve accuracy.

Of course, a scope will make your accuracy even greater. The Model 54 combo comes with a 3-9×40 scope. It’s a decent enough scope for the average shooter and easy to sight in. If you don’t like using scopes, the Model 54’s iron sights are great too.

Pros

The RWS Model 54’s recoilless system makes it one of the best in its class in accuracy. It’s powerful and capable of accurate long range shots. And with the combo package, this rifle even comes with a scope.

Cons

The Model 54 is on the heavy side, but that’s to be expected with a gun of this quality. It also takes some muscle to cock this rifle, but this shouldn’t be an issue for most adults.

The Final Verdict

The RWS Model 54 is one of the most accurate spring-piston air rifles you can buy, and it’s powerful too. For long range pest elimination, it doesn’t get much better than this rifle. It’s easy enough to shoot (although it will take some effort to cock), and the checkered grip and forearm give you great control. The “Air King” is an air rifle that I highly recommend for both experienced and intermediate shooters.
